I have been studying the art of aikido since 1985. In 1992, I founded the Arun Aikido Club in West Sussex UK. We offer aikido classes, self defence seminars, and private lessons to the local community.

Although Aikido is an amazing art, there are some issues regarding being able to use it in a real self defence situation. Here are a few of them...

1 - It takes a long time to reach a good level of skill because aikido involves complex moves that take a lot of repetitive practice.

2 - In dojo training aikido attacks are usually weak. This defender can believe they are performing well, when in fact, they may not be. Plus the fear of being hurt is almost completely removed.

3 - Aikido instructors rarely discuss what really takes place when faced with a violent attack. The rush of adrenaline, the fight/flight syndrome, panic, fear, often causing you to freeze on the spot.
