New research shows urgent need for UK Government action on school meal nutritional standards.
New research compiled by the Soil Association shows a massive variation in school meal provision across England. The research shows that the Government must act now to introduce baseline nutritional standards to ensure all children have a healthy school dinner.
Recently the Soil Association has contacted 143 of the 147 local education authorities (LEAs) that provide primary school meals in England. Some seemed unsure of the level of spending and uptake of school meals, and some changed their response during the research, but 79 LEAs did respond in full.
Over three-quarters said they spend less than 50 pence per child on ingredients - the minimum figure that Jamie Oliver says should be spent on school meals. The Soil Association has been arguing for over two years that 65 pence should be spent on ingredients to provide a really healthy and tasty school meal. In almost 60% of the education authorities that responded, take up of school meals is under 50%, falling as low as 26% in Oxfordshire. This suggests that over half the nation’s children are not eating a hot meal at lunch time. Peter Melchett, the Soil Association's Policy Director, says: "There are two vital things missing in Ruth Kelly’s recent announcement on school meals - the introduction of baseline nutritional standards for school meals, and increased funding to pay for decent ingredients and for extra hours in the kitchen. At the moment, Ruth Kelly does not plan to do anything about nutritional standards for primary school meals until September 2006. She must act now, not in a year and a half."
The Soil Association’s Food for Life schools show a systematic increase in uptake and ingredients spend. The Soil Association encourages parents and schools to work with their existing school meal provider to improve the service. The survey showed that many LEAs are struggling to deliver as good a school meal service as possible and many others are working to improve the quality of school meals.

FEATURE ARTICLE RELAX & CLEAR YOUR MIND
What is Relaxation ? It is a release of mental and muscular tension, and the ability to put the mind and body into a passive state !
When the body is completely relaxed we are able to calm and control the mind and it's chaotic thoughts. Our heart rate begins to slow down and the cells of the body are revitalised which is beneficial to our health.
Instant Relaxation can be used anywhere and anytime in only a few minutes to protect us from stress and restore our energy levels.
Instant Relaxation Exercise... based entirely upon breathing technique.
1 - Inhale and Breathe in deeply, through the nose.
2 - Hold the in-breath for 5-10 seconds.
3 - Exhale and Breathe out deeply, through the mouth.
4 - Hold the out-breathe for 3-5 seconds.
5 - Repeat the above exercise 3-5 times.
You now have a simple tool that is easy to apply anytime you feel stress and strain in your life... breathe deeply and relax. Is an 'Expert' someone who makes simple things difficult... or difficult things simple ? The most obvious answers to our health problems are always simple and natural. In fact they are so close to us that we often overlook them for more complex methods.

CLEAR YOUR MIND
What is the Mind ?
It is everything connected to our intellectual and psychological functions.
There is a powerful knowledge and wisdom of ourselves that is hidden deep within us. This true inner knowledge can be found beneath the facade of education... cultural and social conditioning and is our true character and personality.
In order to clear the mind we must stop the mental chatter and internal voice... where we discover we are governed by instinct. Most people prefer security, predictability and even boredom by functioning automatically and superficially. This type of mind organises itself according to established habits and is narrow and unbalanced.
Each of us feels intuitively that there is another dimension where we can get free of these limitations and experience success, health and happiness. The intuitive mind is relaxed, agile, receptive, resourceful and lives in the present moment. It is attentive to nature and has the wisdom to be relaxed and at ease with anyone and in any situation.
The human mind is a bridge between the lower dimensions of the body and the upper dimensions of spirit. The natural ability of intuition is suffocated in our early training and education, but we can work on these negative mind-sets that create eternal suffering, stress and dis-ease. In order to relax and use our minds effectively we must clear the mental baggage.
We can experience a lack of awareness that results in problems, difficulties and misfortunes... OR... We can experience the present moment with relaxation that leads to harmony, health and happiness.

RELAX AND CONTEMPLATE YOUR LIFE
To clear the mental chatter from our lives we will find the answers written in our life history that unfolds in cycles. Each of these cycles of life have a natural teacher to pass on the wisdom we need to function normally and successfully in a complex world.

Make a list of the 10 defining moments that have had the greatest influence on Your life and contemplate the results.

Make a list of the 7 most important decisions You have made in Your life and contemplate the results of these actions.

Make a list of the 5 most influential people in your life and why... this will probably include You, Your Mother & father etc.
