UN condemns violence in Iraq The High Civilian Casualties, Particularly Children, are Unacceptable
BAGHDAD/AMMAN, JORDAN, 1 March 2006: The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and the UNICEF Iraq Country Office strongly condemn the continuing violent attacks in Iraq which are taking an ever-increasing number of civilian lives, particularly those of children. The Special Representative of the Secretary General Ashraf Qazi expressed his grave concern at the increasing civilian death toll, stating that, "This brutal violence that takes innocent lives, especially those of children, is totally unacceptable". He stressed that the protection of civilians is an obligation that must be observed by all. "It is important and necessary that all parties, including the Government, adhere to and respect international humanitarian law and are perceived by the population as doing so", he said, adding that, "As Iraqis attempt to rebuild their country, callous acts of violence without regard to possible victims only serve to further intensify and prolong the pervasive sense of insecurity, uncertainty and fear".
There is no official estimate of the number of Iraqi children who have died as a result of the violence in the past crucial months. Nevertheless, figures for civilians made public by a number of sources, such as Iraq Body Count, Brookings Institute, People's Kifah, and the UK Lancet, are all too high. One recent incident, which took place on 15 February in Baghdad, highlights the terrible crime that such violence represents -- three Iraqi children were killed by a bomb on their way to school. The UNICEF Special Representative for Iraq Roger Wright said that in addition to the three children being indiscriminately robbed of their right to life and the terrible loss suffered by their families, "this type of incident creates fear in the hearts of all families. In addition to being afraid your child may never return home from school, just imagine how traumatised children who witness all this violence become. These are the Iraqi civilians and leaders of tomorrow. They must be allowed to grow up and develop in an environment of care and respect, not constant concern and anxiety". He stressed "Enough is enough, it’s high time to put Iraqi children first, on everyone’s agenda."

FEATURE ARTICLE MAGIC AND POWER IN THE MARTIAL ARTS
In the East, participation in the martial arts embraces all aspects of human activity, from physical, emotional, mental & spiritual. This raises the Oriental fighting arts beyond that of mere hand-to-hand combat. One common feature is the training towards a state of total awareness, reached through intuition rather than intellectual understanding. Certain magical processes appear to be at work that defy rational explanation.
The word 'magic' generally appears in the martial arts regarding those techniques thought of as occult or hidden. These methods penetrate the barriers of the physical plane of existence, and connect with a higher spiritual realm.
This is beyond the understanding of the illusion of stage magicians. Sadly, many of the reports of amazing feats demonstrated by martial art 'Guru's' are no more than trickery, or the enthusiasm of those that report them.
They are rare, but there are still experts whose demonstrations totally defy all rational understanding. These are more to do with ritual and the ceremonial magic and mystery of nature.
Magic has been on the planet since the beginning, and probably originated in an early desire to have power over natural forces. It has been linked with spiritual and religious ideas of awe and worship of God or the Gods who were invested with supernatural powers. Science, on the other hand, tries to explain, in purely physical terms, how everything works.
Down the years two primary forms of powerful magic have evolved... that performed in harmony with nature and referred to as 'white magic'; and that which is to do with individual selfish desires, known as 'black magic'
The first can be accomplished by a person who develops a noble, self-disciplined and dedicated attitude towards their art... the main criteria for true martial artists.
Without exception the cornerstone of all martial arts systems are sincerity, discipline, and dedication where some of the results can be termed magical. Important to note is that martial arts training and techniques can be 'seen' to work.
Normally the practise of magic involves the use of a variety of physical equipment, structured rituals, mental images, and meditation techniques. Each of these fighting disciplines have their own unique clothing, set of pre and post combat rituals, and special forms of meditation type techniques as a compliment to actual physical training.

THE PARADOX WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT & ALL THE SAME
When any practitioner of Aikido, Karate, Jujitsu, Kung Fu etc, squares up to an opponent, he/she takes part in a ritual that reflects thousands of years of integrated spiritual, philosophical, psychical and practical efforts of millions of martial arts exponents.
This is in line with the renewed interest in the West of the way of the warrior to confront death while remaining calm and controlled. To overcome the need for violent action through complete mastery of fighting techniques, and the development of true willpower.
In the East the 3-part mind-body-spirit lies at the heart of all martial activity and is closely bound up with many ancient cosmic practises and beliefs. Buddhism, Taoism, Shintoism, the opposing energies of Yin/Yang, and the healing arts of Acupuncture, Shiatsu, Massage etc Ki, Chi, Prana, Vital Life-force, magnetism etc. is the mysterious universal energy available to all of us, that can be controlled through disciplined practise. Using the power of Zen meditation we can learn to replace intellect with intuitive action. Zen does not involve theory, but an 'inner knowing' with no dogma involved.
The power of the mind and spirit are considered infinite, while that of the physical body is limited. Proficiency in the martial arts may be decribed as... 'The ability to perform physically impossible actions through occult development'. Most of the 'Secrets' of the Martial and Healing Arts are 'Hidden in the open'. Right in front of our eyes, the last place we look. Today, there are a number of approaches to the martial arts that fall into one of two camps. One way is based on violence and aggression, under the disguise of self-improvement. The other way is in harmony with the highest principles of the fighting arts, and aims to reduce violence in preparation for the attainment of self-understanding.
Their is still a vast difference in the way the martial arts are practised in the East and West. Instructors in the East tend to introduce, in a subtle way, certain moral, philosophical, and spiritual/magical components to the training. This raises the method beyond merely dealing with a physical attack, to a holistic way of living.
The western Instructors that introduce these esoteric ideas to their students are few and far between. This gives their students and potential new Instructors an unbalanced and incomplete view of the martial arts, which they then pass on. If these ideas were more readily studied, understood and passed on, then we might move from a growing culture of violence to a culture of mutual respect and understanding.
Kiatsu Ryoho Healing Technique
Harmony of Mind-Body-Spirit from the Aikido Health Centre HEALING THE STRENGTH WITHIN
The important role of healing in the martial arts is frequently overlooked or dismissed in literature on the subject. Behind every oriental fighting system lies an indispensible collection of healing methods on all levels of existence... physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.
These martial arts and healing arts hold the same theory and principles regarding their success. The main difference is in the practical application. They are based on a vast knowledge of the workings of the human body, put together by masters of those disciplines down through the centuries.
Confucius, who is perhaps the most quoted in the West of all Chinese philosophers, once wrote... "What the superior man seeks is in himself. What the small man seeks is in others" This leads the student to realise that the greatest discoveries of strength and power will be found within.
Once we have an element of control in the power of Ki or Chi from our internal studies, then we will discover the 'Magic' of the martial arts. This energy is generally gained through directed action of the body and mind in association with correct breathing technique. Special postures and movements flowing intuitively from a calm, relaxed base are eventually developed to reach mastership.
When we have studied and practised beyond the basic ability to defend ourselves, we become compassionate and self aware. This attunement to nature and our fellow human beings helps us to understand that the ultimate objective is to transcend any need for violent actions. This process of personal, alchemical transformation is perhaps the true, ultimate 'MAGIC' of the martial arts.
AIKIDO THE WAY OF HARMONY
Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), who gained the skill to control many attackers at will. He was unique in his ability to express his understanding of universal principles and laws of nature. He was also a very spiritual person who spent years in study, prayer and contemplation.
An excellent way to 'experience' harmony and balance in our lives is to practise the martial art of Aikido. This is an art of Peace that develops in us an acute awareness of our surrounding environment, the ability to be calm, focused, relaxed and centred. Millions of practitioners around the World experience the positive benefits of
