UNICEF Regional Director outlines priorities as South Lebanon moves into recovery phase
TAIBEH, 31 August 2006 - Restoring water and health services - and dealing with the menace of unexploded ordnance - will be UNICEF’s priorities as humanitarian efforts gather pace in south Lebanon, according to UNICEF Regional Director, Omar Abdi. Mr Abdi was speaking during a brief visit to Taibeh, close to the Israeli border, which suffered heavy damage during the recent conflict. Many houses and other buildings have been flattened. At least one school in the area was hit by Israeli bombing. "You don’t need to spend long here to see the amount of work that needs to be done before normal life can resume," said Mr Abdi. "Families are returning to what is left of their homes but economic life is almost at a standstill."
Mr Abdi inspected water tanks provided by UNICEF as a means of ensuring clean water supply to Taibeh and 50-odd surrounding communities where pipes and other infrastructure suffered heavy damage. The tanks are being erected and maintained by key UNICEF partner, Oxfam.
Accompanied by a UNICEF assessment team, Mr Abdi also met staff from the Islamic Health Organisation, which continued providing maternal and other public health care services throughout the 34-day conflict. UNICEF expects to play a leading role in restoring the cold chain infrastructure vital to the re-establishment of routine immunisation to protect children against measles and other diseases.
At several points on the 50 kilometre route from UNICEF’s regional hub in Tyre to Taibeh, items of unexploded ordnance were clearly visible along the roadside. While many have now been cleared by bomb disposal teams, civilians including children continue to suffer injury or death, particularly from cluster bombs that failed to detonate.
UNICEF is supporting a public information campaign, incorporating television and radio advertisements, together with posters and leaflets, warning people about the danger posed by cluster bombs and other lethal munitions.
Mr Abdi noted that south Lebanon was a region where needs existed in relation to children’s health, education and protection even before the war. "It may be that this emergency offers us an opportunity to tackle some of the more deep rooted problems of these communities, and give children and their families a real boost for the future."
About UNICEF For 60 years UNICEF has been the world’s leader for children, working on the ground in 156 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. The world’s largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.
AIKIDO THE WAY OF HARMONY
Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), who gained the skill to control many attackers at will. He was unique in his ability to express his understanding of universal principles and laws of nature. He was also a very spiritual person who spent years in study, prayer and contemplation. An excellent way to 'experience' harmony and balance in our lives is to practise the martial art of Aikido. This is an art of Peace that develops in us an acute awareness of our surrounding environment, the ability to be calm, focused, relaxed and centred. Millions of practitioners around the World experience the positive benefits of

What are the most powerful superfoods, how to absorb the nutrients from your food, why minerals are so important, antioxidants to fight free radicals and cancer, and the spiritual properties of food... stay tuned !
Some experts believe that there are a group of super substances that are particularly effective in counter-acting the effects of ageing. New substances are constantly being researched and studied and there may well be others added to this elite group in the future. The following Superfoods are of particular interest to anti-ageing...
CAROTENES are naturally occurring organic substances that convert into vitamin A. The best known are the beta-carotenes that are powerful antioxidants. There is growing evidence suggesting that a concentration of carotenes in the body, along with naturally occurring antioxidants are factors that determine the length of the lifespan of mammals, including human beings. The best sources are... carrots, green leaf vegetables such as broccoli and spinach, beets, sweet potatoes (yams), squashes, pumpkins etc.
FLAVONOIDS are a group of naturally occurring plant pigments found in fruits and green vegetables. They are potent antioxidants that counteract free radicals to fight cancer, and also have anti-ageing properties. Flavonoids have anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-allergy, and anti-inflammatory properties. They protect the heart, circulation and skin. They are found in... cranberries, bilberries, cherries, blackcurrants, strawberries, raspberries, grapes, broccoli, citrus fruit, apples, mangoes, seeds, herbs, soya milk etc.
GLUTATHIONE is a naturally occurring antioxidant from amino acids. It has attracted interest from anti-ageing specialists as levels are normally low in the elderly and those who are chronically sick. People who live a long life maintain a higher concentration of glutathione in their blood. It is available as a supplement but good sources are... fresh vegetables and fruit, carrots, tomatoes, broccoli, potatoes, spinach, asparagus, avocado pears, water melon, etc.
CO-ENZYME Q10 is a naturally occurring antioxidant enzyme that is found in nearly all human cells and tissue. It plays a vital role in energy metabolism and helps protect the heart and immune system. Levels begin to decline in middle age. Good sources are... mackeral, sardines, herring, tuna, salmon, trout, walnuts, almonds, brazil nuts, soya beans, spinach, It is also available as a supplement.
CARNOSINE is a dipeptide (protein) compound, composed of two amino acid molecules. It occurs naturally in muscles, the brain, nerves, and in the lens of the eyes. It boosts activity against free radicals in the organs, it boost the immune system by increasing the life of the white blood cells which consume bacteria and fight infection. It is available as a supplement and expected to be a key product in promoting a long, healthy and active life. Good sources are... poultry, lean red meat.
PHOSPHOLIPIDS are naturally occurring organic substances containing two fatty acids and phosphate, that have water attracting and water repelling properties. They form an important ingredient of animal and plant cell membrane. One of the best known is lecithin which is found in the membranes of living cells. These have beneficial effects on the brain, nervous system and skin, absorption of vitamins and the control of blood cholesterol. Good sources include... soya beans, corn, walnuts, wholewheat, wheatgerm, egg yolks, liver. Also available as a supplement.
ALPHA LIPOIC ACID is a naturally occurring vitamin like substance made within the body. It provides a vital coenzyme that provides energy to the cells and is an antioxidant that is water and fat soluble. Useful in the treatment of cirrhosis of the liver, cataracts, glaucoma, heart disease, nerve damage, and heavy metal poisoning. During ageing or in the event of disease the ammount in the body is insufficient. Found in red meat, liver, potatoes, brewers yeast, etc.
Natural Organic Healthy Lifestyle
Harmony of Mind-Body-Spirit at the Aikido Health Centre AIR & WATER FOR LIFE
Deep breathing exercises are necessary to improve our abilty to absorb all of the organic foods and supplements we are taking. These can be done along with our exercise routines, like Yoga or Tai Chi Chuan, or separate as required. Breathing exercises usually involve being aware of the diaphragm and using it properly, instead of the chest and ribcage. This ensures we are breathing deeply to the bottom of our lungs, as well as the middle and top. A good way of doing this is to breathe in and out slowly and deeply through the nose, feeling the movement of the diaphragm, and concentrating on filling the lungs.
This exercise can and should be practised anytime and anywhere we are on the planet earth. With regular practise deep breathing and filling the lungs with oxygen will become normal. This benefits the cells of the body, the circulation of blood, and relieves stress.
Water plays an important role in the maintenance of good health and the prevention of age-related conditions. The human body is made up of more than 60% water that must be continuously replenished as it is constantly being lost. Water is naturally eliminated through breathing, sweating, and urination. It is an essential component of tissue, lubricating fluids, and blood. An average adult requires about 3 litres of water each day.
Health experts recommend drinking 6-8 glasses of water every day, along with other drinks. Most people do not drink enough causing dehydration, headache, irritability, forgetfulness and puts a strain on the kidneys.

POWERFUL SUPERFOODS
Mankind's desire for better health leads to a focus on those few herbs and minerals that can give special help. A few herbs and vegetables have been designated as miraculous... potato, pimiento, kelp, alfalfa, goldenseal, spearmint, etc.
Natures process of healing is gradual and requires patience. To give up harmful indulgences requires self-discipline on the part of the sufferer, but it must be done. Habits that have injured the body in the past must be dropped.
Goldenseal is a universal herb as it helps the whole body. It is believed to correct the cause of... colds, flu, chills, rashes, sore throat, burns, constipation, aids digestion, is a detoxifier, heals wounds, toughens flabby tissue and fights infections and fevers. But long-term use is not recommended as it drains the body of B1, B6 & B12 vitamins. If used for more than 5-6 days take extra B and C vitamins.
Drinking raw red potato juice can have miraculous effects as it contains very important enzymes and vitamin C. It should be consumed within 15 minutes of juicing as it loses its effectiveness very quickly. Use ONLY red potatoes as the brown ones contain an anti proteoletic enzyme which inhibits protein digestion and causes constipation, headache, stomach cramps etc.
Pimiento is a sweet pepper often grown in Italy. It contain rich sources of substances required by the body to make connective tissue (collagen)... vit C, vit A, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, chromium, amino acids, flavones, citrines and bioflavonoids. It also contains hormones to maintain the heart.

It helps to balance blood pressure, softens hard arteries, rich in iron to help anaemia, calcium prevents dental problems. The green leaf contains eight essential enzymes. It assists in the digestion of protein, fat, starch and sugar.
Spearmint regulates the delicate PH balance better than any other substance. If your body is too alkaline or too acid spearmint can correct it. It works on the endocrine gland system to regulate, modify and stabilise the functions of the glands. it supplies important minerals that are soothing for the nerves.
