This page discusses Aikido effectiveness.
Why is it generally thought that aikido is less effective than other arts?
Maybe its because very few aikido experts have taken part in mixed martial arts (MMA, UFC) competitions. Although you may have notice some aikido techniques being used to great effect!
Aikido founder Master Morihei Ueshiba O-Sensei developed it from the unique Daito-Ryu Aiki-Jujutsu he learnt from Master Sokaku Takeda. These techniques have been adapted by special forces, police, and security around the world.
One of the many important aiki principles is to avoid a physical confrontation. Many aikido instructors and students are great at this, and have never been in a physical fight... a perfect example of avoidance!
Why?
Many are polite, and respectful people who aim to be kind to other people. They tend to avoid places where confrontations are most likely to take place... where alcohol is consumed, etc..
Do you want to learn moves that lead to aikido effectiveness? Techniques that can instill confidence in your ability to defend yourself in times of need?
Often before a physical attack, is a verbal attack, that can shock you. It can be very intimidating, and in fact, can completely freeze you in your tracks.
It is not like the relaxed training you experience in the comfort of a cosy dojo where you practice complex techniques, that are very effective... in that setting.
But, unless adapted, are unlikely to work in the street!
Why?
Well, in the dojo, the fear level is minimised, and you may not have any adrenaline flowing. But in the street you will experience a surge of adrenaline coursing through your veins. You will be unable to think clearly enough to...
...perform a series of complex moves.
Its wise to have a few Aikido moves, in your mind, ready for the unexpected. A vicious thug needs to be controlled quickly, efficiently and effectively.
Of course, if you are one of those Aikidoka that can stay calm, blend with the aggression, control it, and then go about your day without a worry, because YOU have nothing to worry about!
I suspect, many Aikido practitioners think they are in this category...
but in reality are NOT!
It is far better to be realistic than get badly hurt!
So, what are the moves that lead to aikido effectiveness?
Well, obviously they will not be fancy, flashy Aikido moves, in fact, you will want to focus on the most simple one's possible... What are they? I will tell you in a moment but first, you need to think about...
What You Want To Achieve.
So how can you develop aikido effectiveness?
You don't want to be verbally or physically attacked... right?
Even though you are careful where you go, and try to avoid upsetting others, something may still go wrong. After all, you can't shut yourself away in fear...

Aikido Effectiveness
The subject of practical self defense,
has been examined by many martial arts experts. Many have high dan
grades in a variety of martial arts and work in security, as bodyguards,
club doormen, millitary, special forces etc.
Most say that traditional martial arts techniques are not very effective and...
need to be adapted!
The best way to avoid an all out war, is to
use a pre-emptive strike. This has been proven time and again as the
best method to minimise the damage, to you, and your attacker. After
all, the attacker may want to seriously hurt you.
What is a pre-emptive strike?
When and how should it be used?
Well,
the aim is shock the attacker, just at the moment they are about to
launch their attack. A distracting atemi strike to a nerve
centre, as used in Aikido. OR, if absolutely necessary, a full blow to
completely incapacitate.
You should, of course, use this
pre-emptive strike at the right time. If you panic and do it too soon,
you may be accused of attacking them, and rightly so. If you wait too
long you may be attacked, and badly hurt, before you can use it.
Do not use a
clenched fist, unless you have been trained properly how to strike this
way. It often has the effect of breaking the bones in your hands if
bone meets bone. This can occur when someone flinches and lowers their head.
So an open hand is best, using the palm, or the
'karate strike' fleshy part on the side of the hand. Or as in Aikido
atemi a back of the hand flick, between the eyes, only aimed to distract
and not badly hurt them.
For Aikido effectiveness you may need to use a
distracting atemi strike. Often, this will give you the time to
unbalance them, and take control or escape quickly.

Aikido Effectiveness
Many principles that help aikido effectiveness can be adapted for street effective self defence. But it takes some time to
be good enough to use.
Some of the moves I have found to be very effective in my door and security work are iriminage and ushironage to sit them down quickly, sankajo to control them with pain, and aikido pins and immobilisations work very well.
Obviously
you cannot throw someone on their back as they may have a whiplash type injury of the neck, or bang their head on a
hard surface that could fracture their skull. This may be overly
aggressive, and the local headline may read...
'Martial Arts Expert Seriously Injures Attacker'
If you use too much force, you may be prosecuted. But, if you don't use enough force, you may be seriously injured... or worse.
A difficult judgement to make in a split-second. I recommend that you train sufficiently to be able to cause the maximum amount of damage, and then choose not to do it. Martial comes before Art for a reason :)

Aikido Effectiveness
Developing Aikido effectiveness in combat will help you protect yourself. This may make the difference between surviving a violent attack or not.
If you are a beginner, have experience in martial arts, or being trained by someone who has never had a fight, then this will be useful to you. Often, martial arts instructors have no experience of real combat.
Their instructor may not have had any experience of it either, etc.
This is good in many ways. Obviously they know how to avoid trouble, and this is one of the main reasons for learning martial arts.
But sometimes instructors teach their students street defence, in a way that is unlikely to work. This may mean that there are thousands of students believing they have the tools to protect themselves in a street attack...
when they probably don't...
Are YOU Really Sure You Can Protect Yourself?
By slightly adapting the knowledge that you have, you can boost your chances to a new level. The main thing is be realistic, and learn what will really protect you.
Or suffer the consequences!
Here are some of the key elements involved...
The main thing is to survive, don't be there, walk away, run away, talk them down, use a pre-emptive strike to control it quickly, or an all out war...
the choice may often be yours.
Prepare for Every Scenario.
Developing aikido effectiveness for combat is difficult, because complex aikido techniques are not available to you when your adrenaline is flowing.
